Porto Santo Stefano, Maremma, Italy
The House by the Sea with a Panoramic View
The Casa al Mare PORTO SANTO STEFANO, capital of the Argentario, is a picturesque seaside village and holiday resort already appreciated at the time of imperial Rome. The inhabited center of Porto Santo Stefano develops along the two ports. The commercial port, the largest one, is the first one meets upon entering the town, where fishing boats moor and ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri dock. The small port of Pilarella, on the other hand, is the place for walking and relaxing in the town. It can be reached along the promenade designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, here the tables of the bars and restaurants overlook the sea and allow you to taste the local cuisine or sip a drink in total relaxation while admiring the panorama of this enchanting seaside village. The main attraction of the town is the SPANISH FORTRESS, built on two levels, in the first decades of the 17th century and recently restored. The entrance is on the upstream side and consists of a short, narrow flight of stairs ending with what used to be a drawbridge. After the entrance door we find a courtyard with the opening of a cistern in the center and the six rooms of the garrison on the sides. Continuing we have access to the terrace, in a dominant position over the port, in which the stone circles that allowed the rotation of the carriages of the nineteenth-century cannons are still preserved. By means of two lateral ramps we go up to the upper floor where we find another terrace with four slits for the cannons pointing towards the sea. On the opposite side of the fort, towards the mountain, there are two superimposed walkways with small slits for small artillery. A very nice and fun attraction for children is to visit the town's aquarium which is located along the seafront promenade. The apartment is located near the Spanish Fortress, symbol of the town; where it is possible to admire a breathtaking panorama. Under the house there is a bus stop. In a few minutes you can walk to the beaches of Caletta, Moletto and Siluripedio. In a few minutes by car you can reach the beaches of Feniglia, Cala del Gesso, le Cannelle and all the magnificent beaches of the Argentario. On foot it is possible to reach the port where there are embarkations for the famous island of Giglio and for the island of Giannutri.

Places of interest to visit during your stay are several. At about 12 km we find PORTO ERCOLE, a charming seaside resort. The charm of Porto Ercole derives from the imposing Spanish fortresses which were built in the 16th century. during the State of the Principals. Forte Filippo, the Rocca are two forts that can only be seen externally because they have become private inhabited centers, but they can be visited by asking permission from the municipality of Monte Argentario, while Forte Stella can be visited. From all three forts it is possible to admire the wonderful panoramas of the sea. THE PANORAMIC ROAD runs along the part of the promontory facing the open sea and goes from Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole. It is not entirely viable by car, we strongly advise you to travel as far as possible, both from Porto S. Stefano and from Porto Ercole, as the scenery is disarmingly beautiful. CONVENT OF PASSIONIST FRIARS and SUMMIT OF MONTE ARGENTARIO. Between Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano you will find the road which, immersed in lush Mediterranean scrub, climbs up to the top of Monte Argentario. About halfway up the climb you will find the convent of the Passionist Fathers, stop for a visit to the church and to admire a beautiful view of the Orbetello lagoon. Then resume the climb that will lead you to the 645-metre peak called Punta Telegrafo (if there are no clouds the show is guaranteed), the view is lost on the islands of Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo. At about 11 km we find ORBETELLO. The city of Orbetello rises in the middle of the homonymous lagoon. To access the town you have to take a road built on an artificial embankment (the dam), which has divided the lagoon into two bodies of water ("Laguna di Levante" and "Laguna di Ponente"). The lagoon area is bounded towards the sea by two tomboli, the Tombolo della Feniglia and the Tombolo della Giannella, characterized by long sandy beaches, pine forests and Mediterranean scrub. Don't miss the walk in Orbetello where you can do some shopping!!! Leaving Orbetello and going south, we find the ANSEDONIA exit, a hill surrounded by greenery. Located within Ansedonia we find the city of COSA. It was a city, founded in 273 BC. as a colony of Latin law by the Romans. Cosa was located in a strategic position, from where it was possible to control both land and sea traffic. At about 18 km we find the fantastic GARDEN OF THE TAROT. It is an artistic park located in Garavicchio, near Pescia Fiorentina, a municipal fraction of Capalbio (GR), designed by the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, a former student of Gaudi, populated by statues inspired by the figures of the major arcana of the tarot. Unmissable visit to the garden, with fun for children and parents.
